MARLBOROUGH—The Colonial Power Group, the City’s aggregate broker, reported second quarter
savings of over $187,000 for residents who take part in the City of Marlborough’s Community Choice
Power Supply Program. The City’s rate with energy supplier Inspire Energy is $0.09390 per kWh. for all
rate classes and this rate will be in effect until January 2024. Residents’ total savings with Inspire to date
is over $2.9 million and the energy is 100% wind renewable energy.
National Grid’s per kWh. rate is expected to be close to $0.15 cents compared to the City’s $0.0939 cents.
The average homeowner uses 600 kWh. per month and the anticipated average savings is $198.00 this
winter season.
This program is a municipal aggregation that enables local government to combine the purchasing power
on behalf of its residents and businesses to provide them with an alternative to National Grid Basic
Service (M.G.L. c. 164, § 134).
By leveraging its purchasing power, the City is able to negotiate a lower rate. The City estimates there
are around 5,000 customers who are using other energy suppliers who may be paying a higher rate this
winter season. National Grid’s basic rate changes twice a year, in May and November.
“As we get into the winter months, residents and businesses are really going to see a significant savings
on their electricity bills this year. Although we’re about a nickel below National Grid’s rate, it will really
add up,” cited Mayor Arthur Vigeant.
A special thanks to Aggregation Committee Chair Michael Ossing and members who review rates and
trends getting the best possible rate for our residents.
