METHUEN, MA – Mayor D.J. Beauregard announced today that Methuen’s Community Choice Power Supply Program saved participating electricity customers more than $1.14 million from January through June 2026, compared with what they would have paid for supply through National Grid Basic Service over the same six-month period. The figure comes from a new report prepared by Colonial Power Group.

“Electricity bills are still too high. I hear that every day, and I agree – they’re outrageous,” said Mayor Beauregard. “Local government needs to focus on the costs we can actually control. We can’t set National Grid’s delivery charges, but we can negotiate a better price for the electricity supply portion of the bill. In the first six months of this year, that work kept more than $1.14 million in the pockets of people participating in Methuen’s program.”

Methuen’s supply rate is fixed at 12.83 cents per kilowatt-hour through December 2027. The City secured the rate when the program launched in late 2024. About 12,500 consumers participated each month during the first half of 2026, according to the report.

The fixed rate also provides protection when National Grid’s Basic Service supply prices rise. Since August, National Grid’s residential Basic Service rate has been 17.185 cents per kilowatt-hour, making Methuen’s program rate about 25 percent lower for the supply portion of a residential bill.

“Municipal aggregation doesn’t solve the whole problem,” Beauregard said. “Delivery charges remain a major burden – and they are outside the City’s control – but these are real, measurable savings on the part of the bill where we can make a difference. The stable rate also gives participating customers some predictability through 2027.”

The $1.14 million figure compares the program’s supply rate with the applicable National Grid Basic Service rates and the electricity used by participating meters from January through June. The comparison does not include delivery charges.

National Grid continues to deliver electricity and issue customers’ monthly bills. Participants may leave Methuen’s program without a program cancellation fee; customers switching from another supplier should check whether that supplier charges an early termination fee. The program aims to deliver savings over its full term, but because National Grid’s Basic Service rate changes over time, future savings are not guaranteed.
